Fluyt, Pirates Favour Target

A fluyt, fluit, or flute (Dutch pronunciation: [flœy̯t])[p] is a Dutch type of sailing vessel originally designed as a dedicated cargo vessel. Originating from the Netherlands in the 16th century, the vessel was designed to facilitate transoceanic delivery with the maximum of space and crew efficiency. The inexpensive ship — which could be built in large numbers[1] — usually carried 12 to 15 cannons, but was still a somewhat easy target for pirates. Nonetheless, the fluyt was a significant factor in the 17th century rise of the Dutch seaborne empire.[2][edit] Ship designThe standard fluyt design minimized or completely eliminated its armaments...

Barbary Corsairs

The Barbary Corsairs, sometimes called Ottoman Corsairs or Barbary Pirates, were an alliance of Muslim pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa from the time of the Crusades (11th century) until the early 19th century. Based in North African ports such as Tunis, Tripoli, Algiers, Salé, and other ports in Morocco, they sailed mainly along the stretch of northern Africa known as the Barbary Coast.[1] Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean, south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard, and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland, and they primarily commandeered western European ships in the western Mediterranean...

Pedro Menéndez de Avilés The Designer of Treasure Fleet

Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (February 15, 1519 – September 17, 1574) was a sixteenth century Spanish admiral and pirate hunter. He is best remembered for his founding St. Augustine, Florida (the first permanent European settlement and oldest port city in what is now the continental United States) on August 28, 1565, and also for his subsequent destruction of the French settlement of Fort Caroline. Menéndez was the first governor of Florida. In 1561, Menéndez commanded the galleons of the great Armada de la Carrera (Spanish treasure fleet) on their voyage from Mexico to Spain. When he had delivered the treasure fleet to Spain, he asked permission...

Spanish Treasure Fleet

The Spanish treasure fleets (or West Indies Fleet from Spanish Flota de Indias) was a convoy system adopted by the Spanish Empire from 1566 to 1790. The convoys were general purpose fleets used for transporting a wide variety of items, including agricultural goods and sometimes even lumber, manufactures and various metal resources and luxuries, most famously silver and gold, but also gems, pearls, spices, sugar, tobacco, silk, and other exotic goods from the Spanish colonies to Spain. Manufactures such as tools and other everyday items as well as Spanish emmigrants were transported in the opposite direction.Spanish ships had brought treasure...

Alvilda The Pirate Princess

Alvilda was a Danish/Gothic Princess who lived in what is now Sweden. There is some doubt of Alvilda's actual exisistance. In fact, the date of her reign cannot even be verified (some say as early as the 5th Century up to as late as the 12th century). Much of what we know is based upon the verbal retelling by bards in the Viking halls. The story starts with Alvilda rejecting her suitor, Prince Alf (son of King Sigarus- or Sigar- of Denmark). There is a difference of the story with how her rejection took...
